  • Ascend Malibu is my home church, I've been going there since 2013. Pastor Jonathan Morris and the leadership there have really cared for me and invested in me, even sending me on missions trips to Haiti and Southeast Asia. It's a blessed, Spirit-filled group. Great place for artists also :)

  • I’ve been attending Ascend for 2-3 years. Before that I tried out many other churches and this church turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. It’s Bible based and spirit filled. Since I started attending, the church has gone through some changes, and with each change some members have moved on. One change was that the Rabbinical Pastor who was here when I started, began to get called to preach around the country and the world, and so resigned at the church. (As a rabbi, this man was interesting and had many fresh insights that blessed those who heard him.) It ought to be noted that many of the members who left at that time, traveled to Malibu specifically to hear that pastor speak. It also ought to be noted that, before that pastor moved on, there were members who were leaving because they felt like that pastor had too many other outside things going on to be committed enough to run the church.

Currently, the people who preach at Ascend on Sunday morning are inspiring and often very insightful, and they keep getting more so every week! I feel like I’m on the right track when a speaker talks about things that are in the very same vein that the Lord has been speaking to me about, and that happens often here. There is at least 4 different people that teach on Sunday and thankfully, it never gets redundant. These various teachers are all enthusiastic Biblical teachers and they all complement each other in that way.

Being a member of a small church is not a problem for me. On the contrary, at this point in my walk with the Lord, it’s a benefit. For instance, I’ve been able to become closely acquainted with almost everyone there, and there are many blessings that go along with those kinds of church relationships. Another benefit of our small church: The members are often able to interact with the speaker during a sermon on Sunday mornings!

The worship leaders are talented, musical and spirit filled. Worship is not a sleepy “drone-fest,” but is very uplifting...the way it should be! There's also a professional sound guy running the board.

There is an art group where anyone can come and paint before service on certain Sundays, no matter how skillful they are, and all supplies except canvas are provided. It’s fun and friendly, and potentially could expand to other art forms.

There are 2 weekly Bible studies: One where we enjoy a meal together, another where we sing worship together, and at both we study the Bible and pray together. “Iron,” is definitely “sharpening iron,” (as they say in the Bible) at both studies. With all this “togetherness,” don’t get the wrong idea that new members would not feel welcomed. God’s love is definitely working through this church and in the Bible studies. Non-church members also can and do attend these Bible studies. I’d say that one need not worry if they’re a non-Christian or not very familiar with the Bible-I don’t think anyone would look down on someone if they thought that Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife! Lol. I’m sure that here a seeker will find support and love and prayer no matter where they’re coming from.

This church is not only a group of really cool people, but has really become a strong foundation of believers prepared to do God’s will, whether He sees fit to grow our church or to continue to personally grow each member...or do both.

The founder of the church, Pastor Jonathan, is heavily involved in the mission field and has planted hundreds of churches in faraway places all around the world. He’s seen many amazing miracles of healing!
